The area that encompasses Fall River, Massachusetts was originally inhabited by The Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe of the Pokanoket nation. Colonizing settlers from England acquired the land now known as Fall River in the Freeman's Purchase of 1686 (Phillips, 1941). It officially became an incorporated city in 1803, and soon came to be known for its textile manufacturing. While the city obtained prominence, it also suffered hardships, from devastating fires to the infamous Lizzie Borden murders. The city has a rich history, and this guide has been created to explore it in an accessible and interactive way.
